Affiliate Marketing Blunders
As work from home business owners, we will from time to time make some blunders along the way. It could be anything from starting a promotion to late for a holiday, to finding new products to sell, before they become to popular. We all have been guilty of doing something late for our website, or to our work from home business. I know I am.
As home business owners, and most likely affiliate marketers, we know that our business is based on trial and error. We need to steer clear of as many common mistakes as possible. But, when the inevitable occurs, and it ends up costing us money, a quick remedy can prevent additional losses.
Here is a list of some common blunders made in affiliate marketing:
Expanding to rapidly
I know, you find an affiliate opportunity that you just can’t pass up – so you join up, buy a domain name, and get everything ready to go. Then you find out you just don’t have the time to start this new opportunity. I’m guilty of this myself, I had just started up 3 new websites…and then WHAM…a new opportunity.
Needless to say, I really missed out on that new opportunity, by the time I got the new website built, I missed out on the initial rush of sales. My BAD!!
So, don’t take on more than you can handle, it could be a costly error.
It takes time and effort to build these new home businesses successfully, and the return may not be worth the stress and energy it took to juggle more than you could handle. Focus on a few offers, optimize those perfectly, get them profitable, and then move on to the next offer.
Keep your website fresh
Keep things fresh, vary your campaign selections. Be creative in your optimization efforts. Remember that variety is the spice of life. Sticking with the same campaigns and ignoring other offers, could lead to staleness and missed opportunities.
Remember, your offers should be relevant, targeted, and compatible with the other programs you are already promoting.
Website Promotion
Another common blunder is how your promote your affiliate program. Internet marketing is constantly changing. Right now the HOT strategy is using social media. Before that it was social bookmarking.
It is important to consider your target audience when deciding how to promote an offer. If your target audience is not using your promotional strategy, then you need to find out how they are shopping. Then add that type of promotion to your strategy.
If your promotional strategy is not working at all, then drop that strategy and move to another type strategy.
Product Promotion Scheduling
This is another one I have a problem with. You need to be aware of any seasonal, or special occasion days. This could be a public holiday, back-to-school, Valentines Day, or vacation planning time. It is very important to make your offers relevant, in order to appeal to your audience and boost your revenues. Seasonality is never out of season.
So, you need to start planning 4-6 weeks in advance. That way, you will have to time to improve the rankings of your website and get all your “ducks in a row.”
Promotional Tools
You need to be current with any banners or links for your products. So check them often. The affiliate program could change their marketing strategy, they could offer a seasonal promotion, or any other reason that would make the banners you are using obsolete.
Also, you can get in touch with the affiliate manager (AM), and get some ideas on what tactics to use to promote the product.
Non-compliance
This is another one that I’m lax on right now. I’m not real sure what is required for this. But, it looks like it’s something we’re all going to have to do.
With the FTC and industry organizations cracking down on non-compliant affiliates, it is even more important now to keep up-to-date with regulatory guidelines. Advertisers continuously look to partner with affiliates who will protect their brand image and reputation, and will take their business away from any non-compliant affiliates. So to keep the money flowing in, make sure you stay on the right side of compliance.
As work from home business owners, we need to be doing these things to make our home businesses more profitable. In most cases, these do not take that much time to do. By knowing these blunders, you can be prepared and hopefully avoid these perils to safeguard your profits.
