In days past, it was easy to create a website that would make sales. It’s a whole lot harder today with all the changes that the major search engines make each day. What works today may not work tomorrow. And, you must keep up with these changes in order to get and keep the ranking of your website.

In this article I’m going to cover some of the more important elements that need to be included in your website.

First, get a quality web hosting service. Get a package that has an unlimited bandwidth and unlimited domains, of you are going to build many websites. I am using HostGator and 1 and 1 Internet, and have had no problems with either.

Second, use the WordPress blogging platform to build your websites. It is easy to load and use. You do not have to know how to write HTML coding to build your website.

Third, use a premium WordPress theme. I use the Socrates WordPress theme. It has all the whistles and bells, and is less expensive than other premium themes. It is also easy to use, even for beginners. And, can be used for any niche.

Elements needed to produce a website that converts visitors into buyers.

Home Page Layout

You will need to figure out what layout works best in your niche. They could range from website with no columns, two columns, or three columns. Some websites can utilize a magazine style layout.

Balance the text (content) and graphics (images) on a page. It’s easy to get carried away with lots of images and animations, but they can make a page very hard to read.

Web pages are made up of five essential parts: headlines, content, images, navigation, and ads. Most Web pages contain at least three of these elements and many contain all five.

Headlines

Headlines or titles are one of the most prominent elements on your Web pages. They must grab the attention of your visitors and make them want to read more of your website.

Content

Body content is the text that makes up the majority of your Web page. Content is why people come to your Web page and the layout of that content can help them read it more effectively.

Content is probably the most important element of the website. The home page should be mostly content, not just a bunch of ads and images. Google and the other major search engines are looking for content to rank websites.

For the home page, I suggest that you write 500 words minimum, up to 1,000 words maximum. You don’t want it too short or too long, you want it long enough to cover what your website is all about and what you have to offer.

Images

Images (graphics) are the visual elements of almost every Web page. They draw the eye and help direct readers to specific parts of the page. In fact, most high quality Web pages have a couple of high quality images to both decorate and give information on the page.

When you’re considering your layout, remember that images are a major part of the design, not just afterthoughts.

Navigation

Navigation plays a crucial role for most Web pages, to keep customers on the site and reading other pages. But Web pages can also have internal navigation, especially long pages with lots of content. Navigation helps your readers stay oriented and makes it possible for them to find their way around the page and the site as a whole.

Ads (Banners)

Right now Google is penalizing websites that have too many ads (banners) above the fold. So try to limit them to one or two ads above the fold. You can place more below the fold, just don’t over do it. I wouldn’t have more than 6 ads total for the page.

Again, don’t over use banners. The search engines will penalize your website for being “spammy.” Also, keep them up to date. Companies will change them a few times a year. So you want to keep them current. I can’t stress this enough.

Use of Keywords

DO NOT over use your keywords or keyword phrases in the content of your website. I suggest using them only about 3-5% of the time. Also, DO Not just throw them into the content randomly. They must be incorporated in such a way as to look natural and flow with the topic.

Most search engines will penalize a website if they over-stuff the content with keywords.

Use a different keyword for each page of your website. Write the content of that page around that specific keyword.

Website Pages

As it stands today, subject to change at any time, your website should have multiple web pages. Google has penalized one-page websites, and I’m sure the other major search engines will follow suit.

You should have made a list of keywords or keyword phrase that you were going to use on your website. Build a page around each of those keywords.

I would suggest between 3-6 pages for your website.

Plugins

When using WordPress to build your website, don’t use many plugins for your website. There are literally thousands of plugins that can be downloaded. But, the fewer used the better. I would say no more than 10-12 plugins. Again, this is up to you.

Google Analytics

You will want to keep track of the information about your website visitors. You will want to know what keywords are being used by people to get to your website. You will want to know how many visitors return to your website. You can get all this information by using Google analytics.

These elements are all on-page search engine optimization tactics. You will then need to start your off-page optimization tactics and website promotion.

Even if you are just starting a work from home business, do not be afraid to build your own websites. In the long run, it will be less expensive than having someone build a website for you. By building a website yourself, you will know how to make any changes to the website that needs to be made at a later date. By incorporating the elements above, you should be able to get good rankings and earn an income.

Here are some simple ideas to use to improve your current backlinks:

Check the links and navigation on your website

Make sure that all the pages of your website are linked together. If they aren’t, then it is likely they will not be to found by the search engines.

Your website should have a clear and logical navigation that emphasizes the pages that you want to see in the search engine results.

Fix links to broken pages on your website

Check your website statistics and redirect all links that go to a non-existing page (404) on your website, and redirect them to an existing page on your site so that your visitors aren’t lost.

Correct links that point to your old domain names

If you have changed your domain name in the past, chances are that some people still link to your old domain name. So, those links to your old domain name should redirect to your new domain with a 301 redirect, to make sure that the links and the visitors that come through these links aren’t lost.

• Get to the point quickly

Ideas on what NOT TO include

Do not make it hard for your visitor to see what you have to offer. Have clean-looking website that is easy to understand and navigate.

Do not use all of your keywords in the homepage content or footer. Again, this could make your content look too “spammy” to your visitors and to the search engines.

Do not include every product benefit. Instead, just use specific product benefits on each specific product page.

Do not write just general information. This can be found everywhere on the Internet.

Do not fill the title with just your keyword. This again could confuse your visitors, and not give a good impression of your website.

Do not link to every product or service you offer. Only link to products in the niche of your website. Otherwise, you will overwhelm or confuse your visitor.

Do not tell your entire story on your homepage. This could just bore your visitors.

Another thing you could do is this. Have someone you trust read your content, then ask them some general questions about what they read. This should give you a good idea of what your
visitors may think. Ask them what they think need to be changed to get the results you want.

The last thing I would do if you are not getting the results you want, is check the your keyword analytics again. You may need to change the keywords for your site. This would be my last resort though.

I think that the content on your homepage is more important than the layout and design of your homepage. I have seen many websites that didn’t look all that good to the eye, but they did have one thing in common, the content was great.

Research

In terms of research, I mean – finding a niche, finding a product or service to sell, and finding the correct keywords or keyword phrases to use for promoting your website.

Niche -

There are many opinions as to how to choose a niche. Some say, “find a niche you know a lot about”. That may not work, it may be too competitive or there may not be any products to sell in that niche. Others say, “go into something that is a hobby”. I’ll give you the same answer.

While these may be good ways, I say be creative. You may have to go into a niche that you know nothing about. I have done this on may occasions. You can be successful by doing this. I will just require more research. Plus, you can choose a product or service that pays well to sell.

Product or Service -

You will need to do research on products or services to promote on your website. You will need a product that offers a good commission on each sale. And, one that is related to your niche.

Keywords -

After deciding on what niche you will be marketing in, you will need to do your research on what keywords or keyword phrases to use for your Internet marketing campaign. These keywords need to have a lot of traffic to them. Not the most competitive (it will take longer to get rankings) and not those that do not have much competition (probably won’t get many sales).

Finding the right keywords is the most important step in any SEO campaign. Make a list of all the words you think people will type in the search box to find your product or service. Next, use something like Google Keyword Tool, to analyze your list for the number of monthly searches.

If you are not getting the results you are wanting. Do not be afraid to change your keywords.

Lastly, do a competitive market analysis on your niche. Check out all the competition on Page 1 of your niche. Look at their page rank, number of backlinks, and any other information you can get about them.

On-Page SEO

Domain Name -

Include your main Keyword in somewhere in your domain name.

Title Tag -

Include your main keyword in the Title of you website.

Meta Tags -

Even though Google has made these less important, I suggest you include them. If you are using WordPress for your website, these will be listed as “tags”. These are the keywords that you used in the article you are publishing.

Alt Tags -

These are for any images used within your article.

Site Map -

Always, always, always include a site map on your website.

Content

Google is now using content in their ranking algorithms. So be sure that your content unique, quality, and informative. Write for your visitors, meaning write articles that inform, answer questions, give a “how-to” list, or reviews of products. That way, your visitors will keep returning.

Try to include your keywords or keyword phrases at a rate of about 3-5% of your total words. If you use them too much, Google and other search engines will think they are SPAM. At a minimum, 5-6 times in your article. This will increase your chances of getting your content properly indexed.

Off-Page SEO

This is probably the most time consuming part of SEO, but something that has to be done. This mainly is building “backlinks”.

There are many ways to build backlinks, ranging from commenting on blogs and forums to linking to other websites. The more…the merrier.

Try to get links from higher ranked sites, like PR5 to PR10 sites, for better quality link-juice. But, also include lots of lower ranked sites.

Also, try to find some .EDU and .GOV sites, they may be hard to find. Even though Google has stated they are not as important as they use to be,

Do not link to pron sites, gambling sites, or any other questionable sites. If you have to stop and wonder if it’s ok to do it then it probably isn’t.

Don’t ever stop building backlinks. Why? Because you can keep getting higher rankings and keep your competition behind you.
